April 29th marks the one-year anniversary of one of the most spectacular weddings the world has ever seen. One year ago, people woke up early to tune-in to the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton in London, England. Over 3-billion people watched the wedding that morning and have become fascinated with the royal couple ever since.
The newlyweds have had a successful and busy year showcasing to the world a happy couple who works well together and who have managed to revitalize the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are the definition of a modern royal couple with a friendly demeanour, who have the capability of putting the people they meet at ease. Their down to earth, unfussy attitudes and impeccable manners have made them a favourite couple watched and scrutinized by the world. Who can’t help but fall in love with them?
Kate’s first year as an official member of the Royal Family has thrust her into the spotlight. And yet, she never made a misstep even when attending sole engagements with her parents or grandparents-in-law. She has also become a style icon, with the fashion world exploding with an eagerness and passion to find out who she’s wearing and where to get her often affordable style. Her style is well documented on blogs dedicated to her fashion choices, such as www.whatkatewore.com, and the items tend to sell-out right away.
William and Kate settled into their new home away from the public eye in the small town of Anglesey, Wales. But not before heading on a romantic honeymoon on a private island in the Seychelles; hosting President Obama and his wife, Michelle, in the UK and attending a whirlwind tour of North America where not one foot was out of place. Not one strand of hair misplaced and no hint of weariness ever detected . The crowds in Canada and the celebrities in California who met with Will and Kate were enamoured by their charm. On her first public tour as a royal, Kate passed with flying colours and people all over the world fell in love with her grace and presence – and the Royal Family felt rejuvenated.
On June 6, 2011 it was announced that Kensington Palace would be Will and Kate’s home when they stay in London. Their home, previously occupied by Princess Margaret, is currently being renovated and will be ready for a royal welcome later in the year.
But perhaps the biggest impact the royal couple has had on the monarchy is a change in the rules of succession. In October, the Commonwealth countries agreed to change a centuries-old law that puts a boy directly in the line of succession even if he is not the first born. This means if Will and Kate’s first child is to be a daughter, she would automatically become next in line to the throne.
From royal tours, to meeting celebrities and raising money for charities, with a presence nobody else can command… Will and Kate have had a year to remember.
