Posh, Sporty, Baby, Ginger and Scary Spice are back! And the girls are immortalized in the new musical ‘Viva Forever’, featuring their famous ’90s pop hits like Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life. The story, based loosely on the girls’ rise to fame, focuses on four friends who enter a TV talent show.
At the show’s premiere in London, Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Halliwell tells the Associated Press it as a tale about friends and mother-daughter relationships: “It’s a celebration of women, of being a mother, friendship, of our music, so many things.”
The ladies say it was their vision to bring their songs to the stage. “It was a sort of thing we talked about for a long time,” says ‘Sporty Spice’ Melanie C. ”I think most people would agree that our music, it really lends itself well to theatre and we just got an absolute dream team on board. And we’re just so happy that the day is finally here, that we can announce it.”
The production is truly a display of ‘girl power’ with heavyweights Judy Craymer, the woman behind the ABBA smash hit Mama Mia and Absolutely Fabulous creator, Jennifer Saunders also teaming up for the project.
Even though the fab five ladies have long since embarked on their own careers, they say they still are fond of those ‘Spice’ names. “We were saying, weren’t we, that we still wear our robes with ‘Baby’ and stuff, you know, across the back,” admits Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton. “You know, it’s part of our lives.”
Meanwhile, ‘Posh Spice’ AKA Victoria Beckham adds: “We’re hoping that we’re going to be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power.”
