Whoa, Nelly!
After six long years, Nelly Furtado is finally releasing a new English-language album, The Spirit Indestructible, which hits stores September 18.
“It’s kind of exciting,” the Portuguese-Canadian singer-songwriter tells ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey. “It took a long time to record. It was sort of 3, 4 years in the making.”
In that time, Nelly also worked towards embracing her curves.
“When I first came out making music, I was maybe 20,” says Nelly. “I was kind of amazed at how the camera adds five pounds, and so just seeing myself for the first time, I think I became a little overly critical of what I looked like. Now in my life, I see fitness more from an athlete’s perspective rather than some aesthetic goal like (needing) a six pack by May 10th, you know?”
The 33-year-old’s fifth studio album reflects her new found confidence but without being stuffy. One of her favourite tracks is Bucket List, which begs the question: what’s on her must-do-before-I-die list? It’s a long one!
“I want to ride in a hot air balloon. I want to go to Iceland. I want to go to Alaska. One day I want to write a book. I kind of want to be a waitress too. I don’t think I’d be good at it though.”
