Tom Cruise and Scientology seem to go hand-in-hand and as quickly as Katie Holmes settled her split from the Mission Impossible star, she also abandoned his beliefs. It has recently been revealed their daughter Suri may also be converting to Catholicism, the religion Katie was raised with. And Suri has been enrolled in the prestigious Convent of the Sacred Heart school in New York, the same all-girls school Lady Gaga, Paris Hilton attended.
While details of the power couple’s settlement haven’t been disclosed, religion has been said to be a part of their negotiations. According to one of Tom’s former spiritual advisers, Marty Rathbun, the actor’s position in the church also affected his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman. The former Scientology Auditor went so far to say the church pitted Tom
and Nicole’s adopted children, Connor and Isabella, against their mother. In an interview with the news show, Rock Center, Marty claimed, “The initial indoctrination of Connor and Bella… was teaching them that certain people are anti-social personalities, they’re suppressive people…like their own mother.” While the church has denied his claims and called “Rathbun an ex-communicated, self-promoter, who is exploiting a private family matter for his own personal financial gain,” one thing is certain, Nicole abandoned Scientology immediately after her divorce in 2001.
Nicole and Katie aren’t the only celebrities who have ditched the religion. While Jerry Seinfeld and Demi Moore left after dabbling with Scientology, director Paul Haggis quit after 34-years of devotion when the church declined to publicly denounce Proposition 8 – the measure that banned same-sex marriage in California. Paul, whose daughter is gay, wrote a resignation letter in which he called the religion a “cult.”
Now, Scientology isn’t the only belief making headlines and we take a look at some of the other controversies, including famous celebrity converts in the video below!
