You may recognize her as the ditzy and superficial Kelly Kapoor from The Office, but Mindy Kaling is nothing but. She is about to blow up big and prove to be one of the best new minds in comedy with The Mindy Project. The show is set to air this fall, but it’s already creating big buzz amongst critics.
Mindy plays an OB/GYN who defies the stereotype of her profession. She’s witty but wild and after a night of binge drinking she gets arrested, but only after insulting an ex in a speech at his wedding! Mindy dishes more on her character’s development to New York Magazine saying , ”I just wanted to do a show that is kind of about dating, about someone who thinks about love all the time.”
The success of the show would have most riding high, but for Mindy the making of her romcom is met with mixed emotions. Her character is partly inspired by her mother, a doctor who passed away the same day the show was green-lighted by Fox, and Mindy opens up to the magazine about this surreal time.
While Mindy struggles with relationships on the show, in real-life she has a tight relationship with collaborator and The Office co-star B.J. Novak – her on-again, off-again love who she calls in a tweet, brilliant and, “my best friend and occasional mortal enemy.”
