Dave Grohl has been a drummer, a frontman and now the multi-talented rocker has added filmmaker to his long list of accomplishments. The Foo Fighters singer has directed the documentary Sound City, telling the story of a legendary Los Angeles music studio that closed its doors in 2011. “I had two intentions with the movie,” Dave tells ET Canada‘s Matte Babel. “To tell the story of Sound City, because otherwise it might just disappear. But also to inspire others to make music.”
Dave has a personal connection to the studio – it’s where his former band Nirvana recorded their landmark 1991 album, Nevermind. Sound City was facing closure as the 20th anniversary of Nevermind approached, and it wasn’t something he took lightly. “It was a huge moment for me,” he explains. “If it wasn’t for that album I don’t know if I’d be here.”
The musician sprung into action in an attempt to preserve the legacy of the studio – which has also played home to fellow music legends Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica: “I started reaching out to everyone like Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and Neil Young… and everybody said okay let’s do it. And that’s when I realized okay, this isn’t going to be some 12-minute YouTube clip, this is going to be a real movie.”
Making the documentary brought up old feelings in the rocker. “It was really like an emotional thing,” he admits. “Because it was like being reunited with something or someone you haven’t seen for 20 years that you feel really connected to.”
Showing the film for the first time at the Sundance Film Festival recently was also emotional, or rather, an emotional roller coaster. “It’s terrifying because when you’re making the movie, you’re convinced you’re making the best f***ing movie ever,” he says, “and then the first time you show it to someone you get that feeling, oh maybe it’s not the greatest movie ever! I was just sitting there thinking ‘oh God, I hope they f***ing like it’ you know?”
