Ontario-born heartthrob Ryan Gosling reveals to GQ Australia that it was the movie Dick Tracy that first inspired him to become an actor in Hollywood. And considering he plays crime fighter Sgt. Jerry Wooters in Gangster Squad, the role sounds like it was a dream come true.
“It was fun,” he admits of shooting the film – about the team of LA cops that took down mobster Mickey Cohen in the late ’40s – that came out in theatres last Friday. “When I was a kid I was kind of obsessed with that movie Dick Tracy. Burger King had all this Dick Tracy stuff and I collected all of it, and I had the posters and I watched it on a loop. Obviously this is a very different movie, but it seemed to have some of the sensibilities of that. So that was fun for me.”
But don’t let his gun-slinging onscreen persona fool you, Ryan also lets the magazine on a little secret – revealing his softer side. It seems the actor is also talented at knitting. Yes, that’s right, knitting.
“I did this scene in Lars and the Real Girl where I was in a room full of old ladies who were knitting, and it was an all-day scene, so they showed me how,” he admits. “It was one of the most relaxing days of my life. If I had to design my perfect day, that would be it. And you get something out of it at the end. You get a nice present. For someone who wants an oddly shaped, off-putting scarf.”
Now, we already have a winner for the signed Gangster Squad poster Twitter giveaway we did last week, but look out for our next giveaway – it could just be a handcrafted item knitted by The Goz himself!
